Inspiration From Caohagan, a Tiny Pacific Island

Dana Jones presented a fascinating and inspirational program on "Pagtinabangay: The Quilts and Quiltmakers of Caohagan Island" which is also the title of her book. Using slides, narration, and dozens of colorful quilts to convey the story of the quiltmakers of this tropical island (13 acres and 600 inhabitants) in the Philippines, Dana captivated the audience of Estes Valley Guild members and guests at the meeting Wednesday, February 8.

The Visaya word "pagtinabangay" means working together in a
spirit of cooperation for the good of all

Here are a few images of the stunning Caohagan quilts Dana brought to the meeting. The quilts and their images are copyrighted and used with permission.

The colors used by the quiltmakers are those seen on the island and the images reflect everyday life (flowers, trees, animals, fish, birds, people, houses, and activities). About 100 men, women, and children make the distinctive quilts which are sold to benefit the entire community. One third of the island's revenue comes from the sale of the quilts.

Dana Jones - February 8th Presenter

"Pagtinabangay: The Quilts & Quiltmakers

of Caohagan Island"

Estes Valley Quilt Guild invites you to attend our guild meeting on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 6:30pm. Our speaker Dana Jones, a former editor of Quilters Newsletter magazine, will share the story of Pagtinabangay: The Quilts & Quiltmakers of Caohagan Island. This is a 13-acre tropical paradise in the central Philippines. Of the 600 residents on the island, more than 100 are quiltmakers. Dana will share images of the quilts and life on the island along with a mini trunk show that will include some of the quilts exhibited at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky, during the summer of 2015. Each handmade quilt is a unique design that reflects the colors and flora and fauna of the island, made from fabrics produced in the Philippines and incorporating piecing and appliqué.

There will also be an exhibit of these quilts at the Quilt Museum in Golden in 2017.  This will be our sneak preview!
You can purchase a signed copy of Dana's book, Pagtinabangay: The Quilts and Quiltmakers of Caohagan Island. She will also have quilts from the island available for purchase with all the proceeds going back to the quiltmakers.

Guests are encouraged to attend for a nominal fee of $10.

Join us at Good Sam’s, 1901 Ptarmigan Trail,
Wednesday, February 8th at 6:30 pm.
