I made this quilt several years ago when Cottonwood Quilts in Niwot was still in business. I took part in Jo’s Little Women Club by creator Jo Morton. The group would meet every so often (I don’t remember exactly how often), receive our fabrics, discuss making the small quilts and do all the sewing at home.  We would then bring in our completed quilt tops to show the group.  This quilt measures 42-1/2” square and is named Holiday Inn.  The pattern called for a floral appliqué in the center, but I changed mine to the four churn dash. The fabrics were all by Jo Morton for Andover Fabrics. It was quilted by Mindy here in Estes. The pattern appears in “Jo’s Little Favorites II.”

From time to time, I will post photos of quilts made by our talented members. We all love to see what our quilter friends have created. 

The National Park System by Marlene Hayek

Marlene says the pandemic has provided some quality time with her sewing machine. This wall hanging is 5 feet by 6 feet and features a Rocky Mountain National Park center panel surrounded by images of sixty other national parks. It proudly hangs in her sewing room.

 

Who Has Made a Quilt Inspired by a Favorite Book?

I still have my copy of this magical book, a gift for my 5th birthday.

One of my favorite books as a young child was The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. It was the first of seven in the Chronicles of Narnia published between 1950 and 1956. 

Four London children (two sisters and two brothers) are sent to the large home of a professor in the English countryside during the air-raids in WWII. During a game of hide-and-seek, they accidentally discover that the wardrobe in a spare room is the portal to the land of Narnia, where it is forever winter. Lucy is the first to find Narnia, where she meets Mr. Tumnus, and so the adventure begins. 

As I watch the snow falling on this mid-April day, I wonder if I've walked through the wardrobe straight into Narnia! I've been thinking about making a Narnia quilt and will spend the next few days making sketches and plans. I won't have to shop for fabric - my stash is ample.

 EVQG Blog Revival

This blog has been inactive for many months, but it's time to open it up, dust it off, and start posting again. Along with our in-person meetings, the Estes Valley Quilt Guild blog has been a minor casualty of the pandemic. The board has been creative in keeping the guild going with Zoom meetings, Show & Tell events, etc. Now that my ailing laptop is healthy again, it will be a pleasure to post pictures and text once more. So, CHEERS to the next chapter of the EVQG Blog!

Donna Smith presented the program at last night's Zoom meeting. Donna is a talented professional longarmer who talked about her journey as a quilter, showing quilt photos and providing tips. Thanks to Donna for an inspiring and informative evening.
