Don’ t miss the newest exhibit at the Cultural Arts Council out by the Elizabeth Guild. This is and Invitational show called Fiber Inspirations opening June 3, 5-8pm. The show will run through June 26th. This show will be featuring: CSU teacher, students and grad student work; Wired and Enlighted group from the Boulder Handweaver’s guild, their speciality is adding LED lights to their weavings, Mountain Valley Weaver’s from Glenwood Springs, and more student fiber work from the Community College of Aurora, students of fiber artist, Sandra Clark. Then we have several individual artists who where invited be part of the exhibit as well. Those artists include, Kara Schorstien Peterson-quilter, and upolstery, Linda Lugenbill- basketry, Kay Dudek- felter, Shannon Kaye –paper Artist, Kathy Bright-weaver, Sara Maypole-knitter. FACE Jurors and FACE planning will also have pieces in the show.

At the Library, June 1st – 30th there will be a display of fiber groups that create their work as a service to the community!

The Weaver Attic will be Fiber Bombing on May 25, have displays of work on the third floor and there will be weaving demostrations Wed. June 8, 1-4pm; June 9 -June12, 12-4pm- Mon. June 13, 1-3pm in the Courtyard shops.

 

June 3rd -12th visit The Studio Fine Art and Framing across from the Art Center by the movie theater. They will be displaying knitting and crocheting from the Stitchin’ Den.

 

Don’t miss the Trail Ridge Quilter’s Sale on Saturday June 11th only, at the Senior Center between 9-3.

And of course there is the FACE of Fiber in the Rockies exhibit opening on June 10th at 1:00 to 6:00, June 11 – 10:00-5:00 and Sunday, June 12- 10:00 to 3:00,the closing reception will be from 1-3, Awards at 2:00. The show will display the work of fiber artists from Colorado and Estes Park.

A History of Redwork

 

Join us at the Estes Valley Quilt Guild meeting on Wednesday, April 13, at 6:45pm to hear our speaker Laura Shotwell, from The Fig Leaf in Ft. Collins. She will present a program on the "History of Redwork."  Redwork embroidery is an easy technique that anyone can learn to do and Laura is looking forward to showing you her tips and tricks, sharing her antique collection and the history of Redwork, as well as getting you started with a free design!"

 

Laura Shotwell has owned and operated The Fig Leaf quilt store in Fort Collins, Colorado for 33 years. Always interested in fabric and sewing, she obtained a degree in textiles at CSU and originally opened The Fig Leaf as a dress fabric’s store. Since then she has expanded into quilting and embroidery materials. Laura is fascinated with quilt history, collects antique textiles, and enjoys teaching quilt history and Redwork embroidery classes. Some of Laura’s antiques are turned into exclusive pattern designs that she sells at her shop.

Guests are encouraged to attend for a nominal fee of $10.

Carolyn Mangler - March 9 meeting

 



 

The Estes Valley Quilt Guild proudly presents local quilter, Carolyn Mangler, landscape artist, as our guest speaker on March 9, 2016. Carolyn’s program "A Simple Approach to Landscape Quilts" will be a hands-on program and demonstration. Each participant attending the meeting will go home with the start of a small landscape quilt and enough information to finish your sample at home. Carolyn will share many tips and techniques on how she chooses her subject matter and how to choose fabrics to create a striking quilt. She will also share samples of her landscape quilts. The materials for your sample will be provided. Please bring a pair of small-bladed scissors, straight pins, a 12" ruler and a Sharpie marker.　

Carolyn has always enjoyed photography. She spent many years photographing her family before moving to Estes Park. When she and her husband, Dan moved to Estes Park in 2000, she found another source of photographic inspiration: the mountains. Very quickly she realized that her love for photography and her love for fabric could translate into landscape quilts. Carolyn's mother introduced her to sewing at an early age, and she made clothes for herself and her children. Carolyn’s initial love of quilting started back in the 1980’s when her girls decided that mom making their clothes was no longer "cool". Her first quilts incorporated a traditional log cabin pattern and a trip around the world pattern. When she moved to Estes Park she was fortunate enough to be hired at Mountain Lady Quilt Shop and was introduced to beautiful quilt fabrics. She made several traditional quilts before branching out into art quilts, specifically landscape quilts, which offer the great "lack of precision" that fits her quilting style better.



"Just Sew!" Retreat 2016



Camaraderie, food, games, gifts, massages and lots of time to sew ... these were the main items on the agenda at EVQG's retreat in Emerald Mountain Lodge last week-end. Forty-one participants creating beautiful quilted projects and enjoying each other's company made for lovely memories. Watch the slide show to the right of this post to see a few of the memorable images.

February 10th - Round Robin Program

 

 

No, our program is not about worm-filled birds. Our version of a Round Robin program features three of our own talented quilters demonstrating techniques.

 

Kathy Bryson will demonstrate Quilt as You Go with Sashing. Learn how to machine quilt your own blocks, one at a time, and then connect them with sashing. Using this technique, a quilter can take her work from start to finish without having to send it out to be quilted.

 

Jeanne Allen will give attendees a pattern for a versatile drawstring bag with four interior pockets. She will explain how to make these handy bags in different sizes from two squares of fabric. Quilters will find dozens of uses for these bags, small or large, and they make delightful gifts.

 

Sometimes a quilt's design demands that the quilter must forgo the easy path of squared corners on the borders and make mitered borders instead. Carol Struve will show a step-by-step method of sewing multiple mitered borders on a quilt.

Emerald Mountain Lodge - YMCA of the Rockies



The 2016 Estes Valley Quilt Guild Retreat is scheduled for February 25-28 at Emerald Mountain Lodge at YMCA of the Rockies. Over forty EVQG members have registered as participants in this annual event. The theme this year is "Just Sew!"  and we plan to devote plenty of time to that. But we'll also make time for delicious meals, games, massages, gifts, snacks, classes and more. Here are the most common comments on past retreat evaluations when asked what participants liked most:

• Spending time with friends
• Making new friends
• Time to sew
• Seeing others' great projects

Linda Strandberg Shows Her Beautiful Family Quilts

 

Linda Strandberg charmed our group with her mother's quilts and their stories at our January 13th meeting. Many of the quilts included scraps from Linda's and her sisters' childhood dresses, aprons, and pajamas. Below are several of her colorful quilts.
