Four of our talented guild members demonstrated techniques in a Round Robin presentation at our January 18th meeting.

Quilt Guild Meeting Rescheduled

The stars are aligned! We were able to reschedule the guild meeting that was canceled last night to NEXT Wednesday, January 18. Same time, same place, same program. Many thanks to the presenters, the program committee, and the hospitality committee for being so flexible. Many thanks to all of you for understanding our need to cancel since the weather was so questionable.

January 11 Meeting Cancelled

Stay inside and make a pot of soup, brew a cup of tea, watch a movie, read a good book, or work on a quilt this evening. Quilters are resourceful!





January 11 Meeting - Round Robin

The first meeting of 2017 will feature a Round Robin of techniques presented and demonstrated by four of our members.

 • Carolyn Mangler  - “Jelly Roll Quilt” - Learn how to make a quick, cute quilt top with your jelly rolls.  Adding some surprise extras makes it special.  She will also present, “Making Half Square Triangles”  This block is used in many complex blocks.  However, making the HST’s one by one can become tedious. There are several methods to making lots of HST’s at once and Carolyn will demonstrate how to make HST's from a tube, make 8 HST’s at once, and squaring up your HST’s quickly and easily. 

 • Jan Thompson – “Dying Lace” – Hands on demo. Have fun learning to dye a piece of  lace you can use in a quilting project. It is an easy and inexpensive way to add a technique  to your repertoire.  

• Debra Van Tassel - "Microwave Bowl Potholders” These handy all-cotton holders will protect your hands from getting burnt when removing a bowl from the microwave.  They can be made in several sizes and also serve as cozies to keep your soup, stew or  cereal warm - or your ice cream cold!

 • Kelly Brown - “How to Square a Quilt”- Kelly will share her method for squaring a quilt. This was a topic on the 2016 survey that many people requested!

The speaker at the September 14, 2016 Estes Valley Quilt Guild meeting will be Janna Thomas. Janna will present a collection of quilts spanning from her first book with Martingale & Co through her other books written for their publishing company, Courtship Quilts, including her most recent book, Border Bling. She’ll take us on a journey through the company’s history, her patterns that she designs to showcase their amazing Bloc Loc Rulers and will conclude the evening with a brief demonstration on the Half-Square Triangle, Flying Geese, Triangle-in-a-Square, Half-Rectangle Triangle, Diamond-in-a-Triangle, Log Cabin and their incredible Non-Slip Rulers. Following the demonstration, we’ll be able to purchase rulers and books.

 

Janna will be offering a class on the making of one of her quilts and the use of the rulers on September 29th, 9:00-4:00. Participants in the class with receive a FREE pattern for the quilt and a 15% discount on the rulers. The cost for the class will be $20. She must have 15-20 participants for the class to happen. You can sign up for the class at the program and as a group you will pick the pattern you would like create in the class. If you are worried about how complicated they appear, don’t worry she is modifying the pattern to make it fun and easy. Janna Thomas was born in Loveland, Colorado and still lives there today with her husband, Paul. Together, they run their companies, Bloc Loc Rulers and Courtship Quilts Publishing. They also love meeting quilters at shows across the United States, Australia and England. Paul is a native of Australia.

 

Janna was a middle school Home Economics teacher for many years and has loved all forms of needlework through the decades, but when she started quilting, she never looked back. She loves to do both piecework and applique and specializes in mixing un-related techniques to achieve new designs.

 

Her quilts have appeared in Fons & Porter Magazine and has designed patterns for Timeless Treasures Fabrics. She also teaches classes at quilt shows & guilds across the United States. Look for her appearance on "The Quilt Show" with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims, episode #1803. The subject of her appearance is her latest book, "Border Bling".

 

Janna has written five books and is the President of Courtship Quilts Publishing. She also co-designs rulers with her husband, Paul for Bloc Loc Rulers. Paul is the inventor of Bloc Loc Rulers and is President of the company.



August Show & Tell Quilts

quilted projects at our August 10th meeting.        

 

 

 

Quilting for a Silo



Several members of the Estes Valley Quilt Guild spent the day working on a large quilt which will be hung in the Estes Park Event Center Silo building shown on the left in the above photo. The town commissioned our guild to create a 6 ft. by 10 ft. quilt to hang on one of the interior walls of the silo to help with the acoustics in the space.

The guild members are making a much larger version of the quilt shown below, Into the Woods, designed by Kara Peterson, a former Estes Park quilter.

 

Today we were pleased to finish piecing all the background blocks in shades of brown, gold, green, blue, and red. Our sewing machines were really humming. Here are a few photos of the silo quilt workshop held in the multi-purpose room at Good Samaritan Village.
