Vintage to Now - March 14, 2018 Program Presented by Joyce Franklin

Joyce Franklin, owner of The Piece Works Quilt Shop in Winterset, Iowa, will present "Vintage to Now" at our March 14, 2018 meeting.

Joyce will share her experience as a quilter and shop owner. She will present a range of quilts, from antique and traditional to modern and art quilts. A quilter for 46 years, Joyce has seen it all and fully believes that quilting has something for everyone. Learn more about Joyce and her shop, which is located in Madison County, Iowa, just a few doors down from the Iowa Quilt Museum. Sewing and Quilting at Makerspace

Estes Valley Library has recently opened a second-floor room called Makerspace. Equipped with tables, chairs, and counter space, this bright comfortable room is the perfect place for ten or twelve quilters to spend several hours doing what they love. Our first meeting was on Thursday from 10 - 3. At the bottom of this page is the information you need to join us at a future Makerspace EVQG Meeting.

August 2017 Meeting - Ann L. Petersen Presents "Quilt as Desired"

Ann L. Petersen describes herself as an "obsessive quilter". She is also a talented and prolific quilter. At the August 9th meeting, she treated EVQG members to a showing of many of her quilts, including several award winners. It was a stunning display of artistic talent and workmanship. Enjoy these photos of her quilts and read a brief bio below.

 



Ann learned to sew as a child by her mother and grandmother.  Neither one was a quilter, but her father's mother was and she loved to watch her beautiful quilts come alive.  She was gone before she took advantage of her knowledge, so she turned to the local Parks and Recreation department for classes. This was in the early 1970's and she didn't love the templates and fabrics so completely ignored traditional patchwork. In the mid-1980's when Eleanor Burns, Nancy Zieman and Kaye Woods began to appear on PBS and enticed her back to the quilting world.

By the early 1990's, quilting was her main focus.  She took a job working at a local quilt store in Denver, Great American Quilt Factory.  It was one of the early stores in the quilting world, and the owners, Lynda Milligan and Nancy Smith, also published Possibilities books and Dreamspinners patterns.  The constant exposure to so many talented quilters (co-workers and customers and suppliers) only further fueled her obsessive interest.   In 2002, she decided to enter her local guild's quilt show, The Arapahoe County Quilter's Festival of Quilts.  She made a pattern from a book by Trudie Hughes called Shadow of the Bear.  It won the Best of Show award and she could not have been any more surprised!

In 2011, Great American Quilt Factory went out of business and she found herself retired and sewing full time on the things she loved. She now quilts mostly for shows.  Friends and relatives have more quilts than they probably actually want and her house is well padded with quilts of all sizes.  By making quilts for shows she can test her skills and try to keep improving.  Her latest adventure is teaching on-line for Craftsy.com.   You may also go to her Facebook site and follow her quilting life there: Username:  www.facebook.com/ObsessiveQuilterAnnLPetersen.

Christmas in July

Our July 12 meeting will feature Carol Sullivan from Laughing Ladies Quilting in Berthoud. She will present a series of do-able projects ideal for gift giving.

Carol Sullivan is an instructor for Laughing Ladies Quilt Shop in Berthoud. She will share ideas, patterns, and samples of fabric and quilted gifts you can make for everyone on your list.

Bio: She was raised on a cattle ranch southwest of Douglas, Wyoming attended a rural school through the 8th grade and graduated from Douglas high school in 1973. As a youth she was active in 4-H.  She began sewing at age 8 and has continued sewing through all her life.  Over the years she has done alterations, made dog and cat muzzles for a vet supply house, and been a 4-H leader teaching youth to sew. During the years her children were in school she worked at the school district.  From 1995 to 2015 she worked as a Certified Dental Lab technician fabricating crowns and bridges for dental offices.  Ten of those years Carol ran her own dental lab.  Currently she works part time at Laughing Ladies Quilts in Berthoud serving customers, making store samples and teaching classes. In January of this year Carol attended sewing machine repair school and since has started Sullivan Sewing Machine Service and Repair.  She has a son, daughter, one granddaughter, and 3 grandsons. 

 

You are invited to participate in this holiday meeting by bringing projects that you have made that would be good ideas for holiday gift giving. If you have a copy of the instructions and pattern information, please bring that as well. We will photocopy those instructions for all and have them available at our guild Sew Day on Saturday, July 15, as well as at our August meeting.

 

To give Carol enough time to present her program we are revising the meeting schedule just a bit.  After Carol is done speaking, we will have our usual Show-and-Tell AND the members holiday gift ideas Show-and-Tell.

 

Saturday Sew Day - July 15

Join the Estes Valley Quilt Guild for the Christmas in July Sew Day on Saturday, July 15, 2017 from 9:30 to 3:30.  We will meet at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, 2000 Ptarmigan Trail.  There is no fee for this workshop, but we ask that you bring $10 to cover the cost of lunch and a donation to the church.  We will be ordering sub sandwiches and will provide water, coffee, tea, fruit, chips and cookies.

This is an opportunity for you to use all the new patterns that you will receive from Carol Sullivan, our presenter at the regular guild meeting on Wednesday, July 12th.  So, gather up your fabrics, pack up your sewing machines, bring your rulers and cutters and join us for a fun day of sewing.  

We will provide work tables, cutting mats, irons, boards, extension cords, power strips, spray bottles and even a little holiday music.  You bring whatever you think you need to complete your projects.  Really, you can work on whatever you choose.  So, bring your cheerful dispositions, see what your friends are doing, learn from others and have a great time together.

Donna Mae Norris Presents "Color for Quilters"

 

EVQG members were treated to Donna Mae Norris' presentation on color at the May 10th  meeting. Donna Mae used a color wheel and a variety of quilts to illustrate aspects of color theory and color choices in quilts.

 

 

On Thursday, May 11 Donna Mae taught an all day class on color where each participant created a personal notebook using fabric swatches to illustrate aspects of color theory. Participants learned a lot about color and had fun playing with fabric and working on their notebooks.

Linda Swoboda brought the stunning Silo Quilt to display at our meeting before it is installed in its permanent location in the Silo Conference Room at the Event Center. The quilt was commissioned by the Town of Estes Park and made by several guild members. Watch for a future post on this beautiful quilt.
