Inspiration From Caohagan, a Tiny Pacific Island

Dana Jones presented a fascinating and inspirational program on "Pagtinabangay: The Quilts and Quiltmakers of Caohagan Island" which is also the title of her book. Using slides, narration, and dozens of colorful quilts to convey the story of the quiltmakers of this tropical island (13 acres and 600 inhabitants) in the Philippines, Dana captivated the audience of Estes Valley Guild members and guests at the meeting Wednesday, February 8.

The Visaya word "pagtinabangay" means working together in a
spirit of cooperation for the good of all

Here are a few images of the stunning Caohagan quilts Dana brought to the meeting. The quilts and their images are copyrighted and used with permission.

The colors used by the quiltmakers are those seen on the island and the images reflect everyday life (flowers, trees, animals, fish, birds, people, houses, and activities). About 100 men, women, and children make the distinctive quilts which are sold to benefit the entire community. One third of the island's revenue comes from the sale of the quilts.
